Working while Studying

Students can work part-time while studying. This is one of the big benefits of studying in Australia for international students including Indian students. They can work for a maximum of 40 hours during their course and can work for an unrestricted number of hours during vacations.

Post study work visa

Another big benefit of studying in Australia is the long post study work visa (PSW) available to international students. Australian university graduates don't need a sponsor or job to apply for this visa and can continue to live and work in Australia for 2-4 years after completing their studies.

Intakes in Australia

Australian colleges and universities offer two major intakes with some institutions offering a third, lesser-known-about intake. In some universities, intakes may also be referred to as a semester or trimester. The two major intakes -- and a summer intake -- available in Australia are:
  • Semester 1 / T1:  Late February/early March to late May/early June
  • Semester 2 / T2: Late July/early August through to November
  • Semester 3 / T3: Late October / early November through to February

As a student, you can opt for on-campus residence facility or look for an off-campus accommodation. Most universities in Australia offer on-campus residence facilities to international students, however you need to apply for it separately, and well ahead in time to secure a slot for yourself.

You can also opt for an off-campus accommodation wherein you can share apartments with other students from India or stay with a local Australian family. The rent is usually paid every two weeks or four weeks in advance. You’ll also be asked to pay an equivalent of four to six weeks’ rent in advance as bond.
